"If there is one thing that neuroscience is teaching us about the human mind, it is the deep interdependence between our physiological survival mechanisms, our mental states, our embodied and emotional experiences, and our cultural creations. Balliro integrates these levels of description as she supports readers in becoming singers."

I absolutely loved this book. Linda Balliro is masterfully knowledgeable and writes with love. More than just a book on how to sing, this book teaches you how to understand connect with your voice in a way I have not seen in other materials.

And I’ve just bought this book and it’s brilliant . Been looking for a good , practical and sensible guide built on evidence based science, experience and old knowledge. It gets away from the obsession with mechanics and looks at musical and acoustic efficiency.

It deserves to be in every singer's library and used as it’s full of practical suggestions.

—Florence Lorraine Worley

25 years as Voice Teacher, Singer

Being A Singer provides a refreshing insight into the importance of a singer's ability to find their own voice. The book provides a logical approach that guides singers in the direction of optimal vocal performance. When talking to patients with voice disorders, I will utilize examples from the "chart your experience" exercises.

My voice teacher recommended this book and it's a great one. Explains the "why"s of many of the concepts and techniques, which the youtube videos and articles I've read elsewhere just don't.

—Charles Ethridge

This book teaches you how to find your genuine voice first and foremost, and then helps you to polish and maintain it. Linda Balliro uses the first lesson in the book as the 'getting to know you' she would employ in person, and the tone of her book maintains that connection you feel with her from the beginning. If she asks a question for you to answer, she has encouraging commentary tailored to each possible response. She shows you how to focus on what you are doing by charting your progress. What you begin to notice is an awareness of your own voice and how you use it. It's not just about singing a song. Finding your authentic voice in singing is as important (and part of) finding your 'voice' in life, and as you begin to see the similarities in those two ideas, you will see why utilizing neuroscience - the integration of all possible connections - in your training has such an impact.

An accessible guide for aspiring singers.

This book provides a nuanced approach to singing for vocalists of all levels. Balliro, a graduate of New England Conservatory and an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, writes with clarity and purpose in an easy-to-follow structure, anchored by helpful visuals and resources for further study. The book opens with a general explanation of how the physical act of singing works, followed by self-assessments, replete with exercises and questionnaires, and then moves to more specific chapters on “focusing on your senses by tactilizing, audicizing, and visualizing”—that is, by drawing on memories of physical sensations, sounds, and visual stimuli. By the third chapter, on linking one’s upper and lower register, the scale exercises become more thorough and challenging and Balliro adds accounts of past students’experiences to offer helpful comparisons. In later chapters, particularly those that focus on breathing, Balliro includes advice on posture and strengthening not only one’s voice, but also other physical aspects that affect singing. The exercises and practices are helpful and well organized, but students may most appreciate the author’s accounts of her own life, which provide a sense of levity and humanity to the work and keeps it from feeling like a dry, how-to manual. Balliro is also candid enough to admit that there are “a lot of things I don’t know”; for example, she wasn’t aware of what type of music the band Phish played until a member of the group reached out to her. In conclusion, the author expresses a lofty but relatable hope that the book can be “just the first step toward a more powerful

approach to living your life.” A thorough, well-structured singing manual that will aid both novice and experienced readers.

Empowering, Educational, Entertaining

and Transformative

1. Understand the "why"

Most information about singing is vague. What does "breathe from your diaphragm" actually mean, anyway? Instead of jargon and mysterious concepts, you find out the "why" and "how" in plain language and straightforward instructions, so you won't be confused and you can apply it to your singing right away.

2.

Real-world training and systems

Learn from your own experience with time-tested exercises and routines, self-assessments and troubleshooting. Anyone can train their singing voice, whether you're a beginner or you've developed limiting habits from years of singing and lessons, you can learn these exercises to build the physical and mental habits you need for great singing.

3.

Stories and Interviews

Singers who have been there before you, Mike Gordon from the band PHISH, a Broadway producer, a scientist, a clinician and a manager give you a glimpse behind the scenes. Their stories and interviews will amaze you, make you laugh, inspire you and unleash your creativity.

Why We're Giving The Book Away at Cost...

(And no, it's not a gimmick.)

You can get this bestselling book at the cost of printing, fulfillment, and shipping, and not a penny more.

Why am I doing this?

There are two reasons I'm offering this bargain!

I have a small supply of books leftover from post-Covid era promotion. I can send them to you at cost because that's how I got them from my publisher! (Yes, authors who traditionally publish have to purchase their own books!).

When this supply is gone, I won't have the ability to sell the book at cost.

It's actually costing me a few pennies to get this book to you.

But I'm neither a saint nor losing my mind - although either option is possible depending on who you speak to!

The truth is that I've seen many people grow and develop their singing from this book and I want more people to be able to study with it, no matter your income, resources or access to world-class teaching.

Like many singers, I spent TOO MANY years studying with teachers who didn't know how to teach. You can learn many ideas, vocabulary and concepts from many educated teachers, but there are only a small number who can actually train your voice to sing with power, expression, freedom and joy.

That's why, my goal is to get this book into as many hands as possible.

The second reason I'm selling this book at a bargain, is because when you begin transforming your singing and your life, you may be interested in other books, newsletters, and courses with me.

That's all. :)

I know that "Being A Singer: the Art, Craft and Science" can change your life because it has transformed other singers before you, and I can't wait for you to read it!
